I’m dumping some notes about this from the writing scratchpad but want to first note that I used the original Reaper file to record the Gershwin and Bach pieces for this quarter’s ‘jury’ for MUSI1700 and just copied the files to their respective project folders as well (p0377 & p0378) before doing the editing to submit for my grade. As a note there is a video track that goes through all the different things that I did in my attempt to get the various microphones working in the separate OSB tracks but I’ll have to go through them all to find out which one it is. I’ll try and remember to copy it to the project folder...As another side note I switched to using one of the HD404’s as input instead of the X32 on the later takes so I could have the laptop near the piano as I was recording. There are a number of copies of this spread out all over the place so I need to organize all the files but I first have to finish editing the one for submission. This includes current duplicates of the reaper project files (as p0377, p0378 and p0394) that are on both the Dell and the L:LetsPracticeMusic drive so I can access them on both computers for video editing and sound editing. Now I just have to go through those files and get the ones I want for the videos to submit… ...18:00. I’m converting the p0377 .mkv to an .mp4 with handbrake to import into Premiere Pro. This could have been done in using OBS but this is reasonably familiar to me. The size is 1280x720 and I’m not sure why that was what came out of OBS and there are probably some options that I could explore with handbrake as far as the presets, filters, and other options of the program but that will wait until some other time. Now that that is done I’ll do the same with Gershwin (p0378). ...22:21. The audio on the video recording of the two pieces had a lot of artifacts and noise. I haven't conclusively determined the source of the noise as it appears OBS loses audio (and other) configurations for some reason and resets to the desktop audio. Part of the issue is that I still don't have a clear understanding of how OBS audio works and how to define and recall different profiles, the interrelationships between profiles, devices, and scenes, and the interactions between windows audio, OBS, and other programs. There is still a lot to learn and it will take some time. In the meantime, I fortunately simultaneously recorded the microphone inputs in Reaper (which was using ReaStream to forward to the OBS tracks) and was able to use Premiere Pro to take those .wav files and replace the noisy audio that was recorded on the .mkv generated by OBS. Now that I'm almost finished with the semester I will have time to further explore these linkages and can capture the screens and audio using OBS to help me determine exactly how audio in OBS works. There are some video tutorials on YouTube that give some insight but I have yet to find anything comprehensive about how to utilize the six audio tracks in OBS for things like generating surround (5.1 I assume) and how to decode multiple audio tracks recorded in a .mkv file. The submitted Gershwin video is at https://youtu.be/Ca4K5Jk7dEo.
Monday, December 14, 2020, 12:24. Trying to get set up to record my piano pieces but am not happy with the Bach yet and haven’t tried anything other than working on a 10 measure segment of the Bach all morning today. Now I’m going to see about getting OBS studio set up to record and perhaps try the Gershwin a couple of times but getting the laptop in a convenient location (not to mention the microphones is being somewhat of a pain). I’ve got to get a stable recording setup here and it will happen ...eventually. For now though I’ll keep this tab open to just take notes but I’m going to close out all the other applications on the laptop until I get my system configured the way I want it for recording. I want to see if I can simultaneously record audio in reaper and in OBS although I’m not sure how that will work other than I’ll have to have separate Reastream instances going to OBS from Reaper I think and I’ll go ahead and see if I can set that up now. ...14:50. I’ve been trying to configure some of the microphones and other outputs for sound in OBS and it’s been a pain but I may be starting to figure out how to get it to record the separate microphones to separate microphone tracks simultaneously in Reaper and OBS. Right now I’ve got one of the Lux microphones (with the cardioid capsule) going into channel 8 of the X32 routed to the C2-b (CH08) track (#11) in Reaper which has a ReaStream VST configured as LuxA set to *local broadcast being received by an X32_Ch8 source in OBS with a ReaStream filter attached that is receiving audio/MIDI from identifier LuxA and I think it’s set to the Audio Device ‘Desktop Audio’ configured as ‘Default’ which also has a filter set to LuxA. I’ve done a similar configuration with the SM57 going into X32-Ch1 with the ReaStream VST linking Reaper and OBS named SM57 and set to ‘Desktop Audio 2’ in OBS. I’m not sure how that will all work but I’m going to also set up another 2 microphones and then do a ‘test’ That will still leave me two channels in OBS for audio that may need to be mapped to computer sources but we’ll see how it goes...
